Smartwatch Straps and Cancer: What Recent Studies Reveal About Potential Risks?

Smartwatch Band Risk: Large amounts of PFHxA have been found in smartwatch straps from major companies. The straps included in the study contained this element at an average of 800 parts per billion.

Smartwatch Risk: About a year ago, a study revealed that the straps of various smartwatches and fitness brands can transmit harmful bacteria to the body. Now, a similar study has revealed that the straps that come with smartwatches contain harmful PFHxA acid, which can cause cancer. This study used smartwatches from many well-known companies like Google, Samsung, Apple, and Fitbit.

High levels of cancer-causing substances

Many companies use a type of synthetic rubber called fluoroelastomer in their smartwatch straps. Researchers have noticed high levels of PFHxA in this rubber and have expressed concern. With this smartwatch, people can now understand how well they sleep, whether they have sleep apnea, and keep an eye on these issues. Many people sleep with their smartwatches on at night. Researchers have said that if the PFHxA in this band is in contact with human skin for more than 12 hours a day, it can be dangerous.

Large amounts of PFHxA have been found in the straps of large companies’ smartwatches. The straps included in the study contain an average of 800 parts per billion of this element. One strap contains 16,000 percent of this element, which is 4 times more than the harmful cancer-promoting elements found in any cosmetics.

Cancer can occur from this element

Researchers have said that this rubber is also used in fitness bands. Whenever this acid present in the rubber comes into contact with sweat, it enters the skin through the pores. About 50 percent of the acid can enter the body and one-third of it mixes with the blood. This PFHxA is actually a type of dangerous chemical called ‘forever chemical’, meaning that they are never destroyed under any circumstances, and if they are in the body for a long time, cancer can occur!
